President Trump’s tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports takes effect
(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports go into effect Wednesday.
President Trump announced the tariffs last month, saying the taxes will help create U.S. factory jobs.
Separate tariffs have been issued on Canada, Mexico, and China, with plans to also tax imports from the European Union, Brazil and South Korea by charging "reciprocal" rates starting on April 2.
On Tuesday, the president said tariffs could jump to 50% for Canada in response to Ontario Premier Doug Ford's threat to impose a 25% surcharge on electricity imports into the United States to match the initial U.S. hike.
This was prevented following a conversation between Ford and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, with Trump indicating a doubling of U.S. tariffs for Canada was no longer likely.
