Canadian voters elect Mark Carney as leader of the Liberal Party
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Canada's Liberal Party has a new leader as voters elected Mark Carney to replace Justin Trudeau on Sunday.
However, Trudeau will remain in his role for an undisclosed period while Carney settles in.
"I pledge to you and to all Canadians that I will follow their example. I will work day and night with one purpose, which is to build a stronger Canada for everyone," Carney declared in his speech to the crowd.
Carney will now be expected to lead the party into the next federal elections. Those must take place before October, but could be called even sooner.
The ruling Liberal Party faces an uphill battle as recent polls show the Conservative Party is leading ahead of those elections.
Canada is also facing increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump as the president is threatening to slap tariffs on Canada, and has even suggested making Canada the 51st state of the U.S.
