Fatal shooting suspect still at large
BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Police continue their search efforts for the person or people responsible for shooting and killing a young man in Brawley.
Some neighbors who live in the area say they heard about seven gunshots Sunday morning. The Brawley Police Department (BPD) says an 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the abdomen.Â
"Upon the officers arrival, they immediately render medical aid until medical personnel arrived and then continued the medical aid where the subject was transported to our local hospital," said Commander (Cmdr.) John Tang with BPD.
The victim man later died at the hospital. Police say they collected shell casings from the area and feel the have a good idea of what kind of gun was used.
"We did not see the gun...the evidence that remains is a nine millimeter...possibly a handgun," said Cmdr. Tang.
A neighbor we spoke with who wishes to not be on identified, says a crime scene like this is something she's never experienced before.
"In the morning, see cop cars, so I come out and they ran us off because they're investigating a crime that supposedly happened down on 17th Street and that's all I know, you know, and it's awful because, you know, we don't have this type of crime over here on this side of town," said the neighbor.
She adds that another neighbor claims they heard several gunshots.
BPD say the shooting took place around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. A dark vehicle was seen leaving the area at the time of the shooting.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call BPD.
