Massive dust storm in New Mexico leaves drivers stranded

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A massive dust storm in New Mexico leaves drivers stranded.

The dust storm, known as a haboob, swept across parts of New Mexico at a rapid pace with near zero visibility and winds of 45 miles per hour.

A haboob creates a wall of dust and debris that can grow up to 5,000 feet tall.

Officials issued a health alert and shutdown notice on Monday due to blowing dust.

The National Weather Service (NWS) also issued a dust storm warning for parts of Interstate 10 and 25 and U.S. Highway 70.

Drivers were asked to shelter-in-place as officials tried to get cars off the interstate.
