U.S.M.C. Battle Color Detachment kicks off 2025 season in Yuma
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The United States Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment kicked off it's 2025 season tour in Yuma.
We spoke with two Marine performers who shared what this long-standing tradition means to them.
The event featured performances by the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Marine Corps Color Guard.
MSgt. David Cox, Asst. Drum Major for U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, says, "The Battle Color Detachment, we put in seven hours of work each day. We've been coming to Yuma since 1973, we've only missed a couple years here and there. We love coming out here. It's the best place to come train. That's why we come out here each year."
The event took place at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and marks the first of over 100 to take place this year.
The Commander of the Silent Drill Platoon, Capt. Ford Higgins, shares how they're able to perform in prefect sequence without any cadence.
"That is drill that has lasted since 1948 and is passed on from legacies and traditions of drill masters because we do care. We care about being precise and discipline. We strive for perfection and the Marines put in the work to achieve that," says Capt. Higgins.
The Detachment also performed at Kofa and Gila Ridge High School while in town.
MSgt. Cox says it's his favorite way to reach out to the next generation of United States Marines.
"It strengthens esprit de corps and patriotism amongst the public. Maybe one day those people in the audience will become a Marine one day be filling my shoes or a Marine in the silent drill platoon," he explains.
Capt. Higgins says the selection process is intensive and rightfully so as the Detachment is prepping to celebrate the Marine Corps 250th birthday this November.
"It's impressive to see what work they've put in, and the level of discipline, grit, and toughness that has got them to this point and I'm so proud of these marines. I'm proud to stand in front of them. It's an honor to be a part of this platoon," shares Capt. Higgins.
In case you missed the performances, the Battle Color Detachment will be performing at this year's Air Show coming up on Saturday, March 15 at 10:30 a.m.
