IID launches New Green Space Grant Program to plant trees in urban areas

IID grants $525,000 to fund urban tree planting projects for cooler, greener neighborhoods

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is rolling out a new grant program aimed at cooling urban areas and improving local neighborhoods by planting more trees.

With the growing concern over urban heat islands and the need for more green spaces, the program focuses on reducing heat, lowering energy demand, and enhancing public spaces through the power of trees.

The Public Green Space Grant Program will allocate $525,000 in funding to cities, counties, and community organizations in an effort to support projects that introduce more trees to urban areas.

These efforts are essential to mitigate the effects of extreme heat and create environments that are more comfortable for residents.

According to Robert Schettler of IID, "It's not only a benefit to you, as far as a public park, it's a benefit to everybody. So that's why we need people to take a look at this application, call if they have any questions, and submit."

Cities, counties, and community organizations are eligible for funding under this program. The goal is to empower local groups to create greener, cooler spaces that can be enjoyed by all residents.

In addition to cooling down urban heat, planting trees in public spaces can help reduce energy consumption by providing shade, improving air quality, and offering recreational spaces for the community. It's a holistic approach to enhancing the quality of life for everyone.

Applications for the IID Green Space Grant Program are open now and will close on May 5. Don't miss the opportunity to be part of a greener, cooler, and more sustainable future.
