Roberta Flack, “Killing Me Softly With His Song” singer, dies at 88

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Singer Roberta Flack passed away Monday at 88-year-old.

Flack rose to stardom in the 1970s with song such as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly With His Song." Both songs won Grammy Awards for the legendary singer.

Flack was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina in 1937, but was raised in Arlington, Virginia.

No cause of death was given in a statement from her family. However, Flack did announced in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with ALS and could no longer sing.

In the 1990s, her music enjoyed a resurgence in popularity when hip-hop group the fugees recorded their own Grammy-winning version of "Killing Me Softly."

Overall, Flack earned five Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2020, and left a lasting impact on singers, musicians and music fans around the world.
