Treehouse dedicated to ‘The Simpsons’ to be torn down
SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - It was more than a treehouse. It was a neighborhood landmark, and the Sherman Oaks community said goodbye to "Boney Island" Sunday night.
The man who built it 24 years ago, Rick Polizzi, is being forced by the city to tear it down as L.A. officials say it isn't safe.
Polizzi was a producer on "The Simpsons" and he replicated the treehouse after the show's "Treehouse of Horror" episodes that air in October for Halloween season.
For years, kids and their parents loved playing in the house, but after $50,000 in legal fees, Polizzi is calling it quits and bringing it all down next week.
"It's just a shame that, on a city built based on creativity, the city attorney has nothing better to fight than a treehouse, and it's just a shame. I was just hoping more common sense would prevail," Polizzi expressed.
Polizzi says the problems started seven years ago when a neighbor complained.
The City Attorney's Office, the City's Planning, Building and Safety Department as well as the local council person's office did not respond when CBS affiliate KCBS reached out for comment.
