Local family’s dream of competing on ‘Family Feud’ becomes reality
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - For many fans of the iconic game show 'Family Feud,' the idea of stepping up to the podium to face off against another family is a dream. For one local family, that dream became a reality after a two-year wait.
The Baez family, hailing from Calexico, finally got their chance to compete on the national stage.
The family's long journey to the Family Feud stage began back in 2022 when they applied to be contestants.
After months of anticipation, they received the call to head to Atlanta for their taping. Although they didn't walk away with the grand prize, the experience was unforgettable for each member of the family.
Cathy Baez, one of the family members, recalled the excitement of the experience: "They were telling us, 'This is how it's going to be. This is how it's going to look,' and I was like, 'Oh, you're walking us to the stage.'"
The family was thrilled to be part of such a monumental moment, with the adrenaline running high as they prepared to step in front of the cameras.
For Alfredo Baez, meeting the host, Steve Harvey, was one of the highlights: "Steve Harvey, he was something else. He was great. He gives you a whole show. It's not just about filming Family Feud—he interacts with the audience and makes it like a comedy show, which is awesome."
For the Baez family, it wasn't just about competing on the game show. It was about making memories together. The event also had special significance for the family as they honored the memory of their late father, who was a huge fan of the show.
"We were shocked. Like I said, my dad was a big fan of the game, and my dad passed away. We were big fans, and after I retired, my sister was having a sweet sixteen, and I said, you know what, we're all going to be together. We hardly get together, so I said, 'Let me make a script for this,'" said Alfonso Baez, reflecting on the emotional impact of their Family Feud appearance.
The family's decision to represent Calexico on the show was an easy one.
"That is the only city that made sense," explained Alonso Baez. "With the exception of my wife, who's been there plenty of times, I've been going there since I was 18. That's where we grew up. That's what we all had in common."
The Baez family's appearance on Family Feud not only created cherished memories, but also helped put Calexico on the map, as few contestants have come from the area before.
The Baez family says their time on the show will remain a cherished memory for years to come. From the fun of the game to the chance to bond as a family, it was an experience they'll never forget.
