Local AWC food pantry in need of donations
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Western College's (AWC) food pantry and closet is seeking donations.
"The Cubby" supports students and staff facing food insecurity and offers everything from free non-perishable food items, school supplies, personal care items, and professional clothing.
"We have a lot of students here with food insecurity, and we serve at least on average 20 students a day with the Cubby and with our meal voucher system," said Executive Director of Student Resource Services Laura Sandigo.
One student shares why it's important to have these resources on campus.
"Cause some students may not have the money to afford the food, and having some place that's selling or giving free food away can help some students financially," said AWC student Marcus Ordaz.
They run on monthly donations from food banks, grants, the AWC foundation, and the generosity of the community.
"A majority of our students at Arizona Western College depend on financial aid to attend school, so that notes the need for more basic need support," said Sandigo.
And with the increased demand also means the increased need for donations. The staff says supplies run low by the third week of the month and that any donation, big or small, helps support local college students in need.
"Any more funds that we can have are great. It helps for us to be able to go out and purchase those things that might be lacking in the pantry to make sure that we have those healthy rounded meals," said Sandigo.
The Cubby is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You can drop off donations at the cubby or at any of the below donation boxes on campus:
- Health & Wellness Department, second floor of the 3C building
- Collection box, first floor of the 3C building
- Collection boxes around campus
