More details on the deputy-involved shooting
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) says a man who pointed his gun at deputies is now in a Phoenix Hospital.Â
Deputies say the shooting happened Monday morning on West County 12th 1/2 near South Somerton Avenue and Drysdale Lane.eputy
"The Yuma County Sheriff's Office did respond to a disturbance involving an individual with a firearm in a residential area," said Tania Pavlak, Public Information Officer for YCSO.
According to YCSO, a 51-year-old man was yelling with a shotgun in hand and attempted to open a neighbor's door.
When deputies tried to deescalate the situation, they say the suspect pointed his gun at the officers.
"After the subject pointed the firearm at the deputies, they did discharge their firearms and ultimately struck the subject, he then dropped his shotgun and the deputies were then able to render aid," said Pavlak.
The sheriff's office says "multiple" deputies fired at the suspect.
Those same deputies are now on moderate leave.
"During the incident, there were no deputies or community members that were harmed," said Pavlak.
After the shooting the suspect did get medical attention for his injuries.
"The latest update that we have is that the subject was flown to a Phoenix Area hospital due to the extent of his injuries," said Pavlak.
YCSO has some advice on what to do in these situations.
"We do encourage the community to please contact law enforcement if they do see any type of suspicious activity, if there’s any type of disorderly conduct especially involving firearms such as the reporting party did in this incident," said Pavlak.
The Yuma Regional Critical Incident Response Team is currently investigating this case.
