Yuma Border Patrol agent hit with rocks

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Sector Border Patrol said an agent was attacked this week while arresting border crossers near San Luis, Arizona.

Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin said early Tuesday morning, human smugglers threw rocks at the Border Patrol Agent hitting him in the head.

“We had individuals making an illegal entry into that area and the smugglers who were on the Mexican side of the border, began throwing rocks," said Chief Sean McGoffin, Yuma Sector Border Patrol.

Chief Sean McGoffin said agents are trained to respond to difficult situations.

“This was one in which the agent was struck in the head and had lacerations across his eye," said Chief McGoffin.

He said the agent was taken to the hospital and is now on the road to recovery.

“The agent is doing okay. We’re thankful for him being okay, but he did have to go and receive medical treatment. He’s currently not back to work yet, but we anticipate he will be in the near future, we're just so thankful that he’s safe," said Chief McGoffin.

Chief McGoffin said smugglers do not take human life seriously, for them, it’s all about making money and facilitating the smuggling of people or narcotics into the United States.

“Though our overall assaults have been down, over the previous year, it doesn’t mitigate the fact that these assaults are serious and at any given time, one of these assaults could be fatal.," said Chief McGoffin.

The Yuma Sector said this case is under active investigation and are currently working with the FBI to bring those responsible to justice.
