Fighting the rise of sexually transmitted diseases

There has been a rise of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) this year nationally. This is due to new and easier tests conducted on people to detect STDs.

This rise marks the fifth consecutive year for the rise nationally.

Health officials say that before they used to use swab samples to test individuals for STD’s, which was painful. Now all it takes is a urine sample, and new technology has the capabilities to detect if someone is carrying any of the diseases.

Sometimes STD’s are hard to determine with just the look of an eye, so that’s why it’s important to be tested regularly. If a disease is left un-treated it can lead to future health complications, in some cases’ infertility.

The three most common diseases Yuma County has seen recently is Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis, all which are curable if caught on time.

Any sexual contact including oral, physical, or anal are susceptible to catching a disease if your partner has it.

Health officials recommend always using protection, having a stable partner, and getting tested regularly to help prevent any sexually transmitted diseases.

According to health officials 25% of people don’t know they carry a disease because they are afraid to get tested. However, what you do today will prevent future consequences, says Epidemiologist Benito Lopez.

You can get tested at any clinic or your local health care provider. For more information on hours and location for Yuma County Public Health click HERE.
