Philadelphia residents and Sylvester Stallone celebrate “Rocky Day”

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - For the first time ever, the City of Philadelphia celebrated the iconic movie character "Rocky."

On Sunday, 47 years ago, the first "Rocky" movie premiered in 1976. Now, Philly has officially declared December 3 as "Rocky Day."

"Rocky" himself, Sylvester Stallone, took part in the festivities.

"Standing at the top of these steps, you are reminded. Reminded that all things are possible," Stallone expressed.

Grit, grind and perseverance

For many, it was a day to run the "Rocky" steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. At the bottom of the steps is the "Rocky" Store, which serves as a visitor center with plenty of "Rocky" merchandise and movie memorabilia.

Stallone personally called the city's mayor, suggesting the idea of a shop that opened earlier this year.

If the "Italian stallion" taught us anything about grit, grind and perseverance, people made sure not to let any of Sunday's cold or rain knock them out.

Fans, from as far away as Europe and South America, made the trek to be part of this historic day.
