Former MLB pitcher arrested for 2021 murder
PLACER COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher was arrested Friday in connection to the 2021 murder and attempted murder of his in-laws.
49-year-old Danny Serafini was a league pitcher for seven seasons.
On Friday, he was arrested, along with 33-year-old Samantha Scott, for the murder of 70-year-old Robert Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood. The victims were Serafini's father and mother in-law, according to authorities.
Spohr died from a single gunshot wound while at his Lake Tahoe home in June 2021. Wood was also shot and hospitalized but recovered. However, she died a year later.
"Ongoing investigation"
Surveillance video from the victims' home showed a hooded man wearing a face covering and a backpack walking to the residence several hours before the shooting.
Since then, evidence gathered led detectives to Serafini and Scott as suspects.
"We do believe that masked individual was, in fact, Daniel Serafini. At this time, I'm unable to comment on Samantha Scott's involvement in the case due to it being an ongoing investigation," said Sgt. David Smith of the Placer County Sheriff's Office (PCSO).
The pair, arrested in Winnemucca and Las Vegas respectively, are being held without bail and awaiting extradition to Placer County.
