Cars crash into a home and a liquor store within hours of each other causing major damage

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Jeff Draper, owner of a Yuma home hit by a 28-year-old driver said there were children inside who got out of the way just before the crash happened.

Draper said the kids were building a fort right by the front window just minutes before the car came crashing in.

Luckily they stepped away to grab more pillows right when the car plowed into the home Tuesday night right before 9 p.m. on 20th Avenue and Eighth Street.

Thankfully none of the seven residents were injured, as well as the driver and 29-year-old passenger.

Sgt. Lori Franklin with the Yuma Police Department (YPD) said an officer was in the area and witnessed the car as it went out of control.

"He heard tires squealing so he looks in his rearview mirror and he sees a vehicle behind him and it's going fast and it's fishtailing on the street," said Franklin.

The officer made a U-turn but it was too late.

"And then there was a couple of other people standing around that are victims of it too. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. It was just a matter of going too fast for the circumstances," continued Franklin.

About six hours later, a 19-year-old woman speeding down Fourth Avenue and 13th St rear-ended a van, crashed into a pole, then went right into EZ Shop Market just before 3 a.m. Wednesday.

No one was inside the building and the suspect was able to escape her car that caught fire.

YPD said the woman was under the influence of alcohol.

Katt, an EZ Market customer who comes to the store often said things could have been worse for the driver.

"19 is still pretty young but like that could have hurt a lot of people, you know? Could have hurt the store. But hopefully she can get some help, you know? Not just get in trouble," said Katt.

Evan, EZ Shop Market owner said luckily it's a brick building which stopped the suspect from driving through the store, though lots of smoke and water did seep in. As well as damages to his window, cameras, and cable.

Both drivers were arrested on felony charges.

They are no longer in custody but will be back in court Friday afternoon.
