Highly anticipated Somerton High School hosts grand opening

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - More than 300 people from Yuma County and across Arizona were able to get a first look at the highly anticipated Somerton High School.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at Somerton High School.

“After the arduous and lengthy process, it took to bring it to life, witnessing its realization is truly a testament to perseverance and determination. Decades after being discussed, the community has this incredible facility to provide the backdrop of graduating EVERY student college, career, and community prepared.” 

The new school, designed by DLR Group and constructed by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., marks the seventh high school for Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD).

It positions the district to meet the needs for continued growth in the region.

Previously, Somerton was the largest city in Arizona without its own high school. 

The incoming freshman this fall will be the first graduating class of Somerton High School.

YUHSD said the class of 2027 is excited to set the school's foundation as they will be empowered to achieve personal excellence through a dynamic learning environment.

The Somerton community has been anticipating the opening of the new high school since 2019 when formal planning for the facility began.

DLR Group’s design for the new high school is heavily rooted in CTE programs.

It reflects the agriculture community and prepares students to contribute to their local economy after high school.

The design also incorporates the Colorado River Delta that breathes life into this desert region through a shaded outdoor courtyard that runs through the heart of campus.

Somerton High School will officially open its doors for the 2023 school year on August 3.

The new high school totals nearly 150,000 square feet and will facilitate up to 1,800 students.
