California residents evacuate after a massive landslide

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A massive landslide in California has forced dozens of residents from their homes.

Sixteen people were evacuated from their homes in the Rolling Hills Estates area, located in Los Angeles County, late Saturday evening and more were asked to leave on Sunday.

Officials warning that the ground below is not stable. They say at least 12 homes have been damaged so far.

Officials believe that more homes may be at risk as they continue to survey the situation. During the initial investigation, crews located cracks in several of the homes.

One official speculated that the issue may have been caused by water evaporating in the ground.

It remains unclear when the land began to give way.
