Kitten receiving treatment from the Humane Society of Yuma was stolen by a couple on Friday, June 30

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma police said a kitten from the Humane Society of Yuma (HSOY) was stolen by a man and a woman.

The Yuma Police Department (YPD) said an officer learned that an unidentified Hispanic man and woman went to the Humane Society of Yuma and asked questions about the kitten named Siul.

The couple was asked to complete an Adoption Information Form in order to receive approval to adopt the kitten and did not complete the paperwork.

Yuma Police said through the security camera footage, it appeared the couple waited until they wouldn't be detected.

The woman waited in the car while the man returned, opened the kennel, and took the kitten, and both left in a dark gray Honda Civic, said YPD.

According to HSOY, the kitten's eye was being treated three times per day to relieve pain and control infection.

When the medical team went to provide medication to the kitten in the late morning, they found an empty kennel, said YPD.

Siul was also being evaluated to see if surgery would be required, and finding the kitten soon is critical, said HSOY.

“This kitten is suffering right now without medical attention, so we are asking the community to help us,” shared Executive Director Annette Lagunas. “We are also pleading with this couple to do the right thing and return this kitten so it can receive the medical treatment it needs and the care it deserves. Please call us and we can make arrangements for the kitten to be returned or just come to HSOY.”

YPD attached still photos of the couple taken from the surveillance cameras, including an image of their car.

The license plate matched the color and design of a Mexican Baja California license plate and Yuma police said both speak English and were wearing medical scrubs.

This case is still under investigation.
