PHOENIX (AP) — A person driving a car the wrong way on the South Mountain Freeway in metro Phoenix was killed in a collision with a large truck early Saturday morning, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

The crash occurred in the Elliot Road area soon after the agency started receiving 911 calls about the wrong-way vehicle, the DPS said..

The driver’s identity wasn’t released but the DPS said he was a 31-year-old man.

According to the DPS, the driver was the only person in the wrong-way car and the truck’s driver was not injured.

Investigators “have not ruled out impairment on the part of the wrong-way driver,” DPS spokesman Bart Graves said.

Southbound lanes of the freeway was closed for about seven hours.
