FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Extreme heat continues across Yuma and Imperial Counties

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A First Alert Action Day is now in effect as dangerous heat continues to grip the Desert Southwest.

An Extreme Heat Warning is also in place for Yuma and Imperial Counties, with temperatures expected to reach between 109 and 115 degrees.

This stretch of hot and dry weather is being driven by a strong ridge of high pressure sitting over the Southwest. Sunday and Monday are expected to be the hottest days of the week, even though projections show the extreme temperatures could linger through at least Thursday.

The heat risk remains major to extreme, especially during peak afternoon hours. While a slight dip in temperatures is possible Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions will still remain well above normal. A return to 110+ degree highs is expected by Thursday.

The National Weather Service says widespread moderate to major heat risks will persist throughout the week, and another round of heat alerts may be issued if conditions continue.

Expect a slow cooldown to begin next weekend, with highs potentially dipping into the low 100s or even upper 90s. Until then, the Weather Authority urges everyone to take the heat seriously and check in on neighbors, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals.
