FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Chance of storms lingering through Sunday Night

Potential for showers and storms continue across the Desert Southwest

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A First Alert Action Day remains in effect through Sunday night as widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms move across the Desert Southwest.

Moisture from a remnant tropical system is fueling this unusual late-spring weather pattern. Rainfall totals are expected to range between one-tenth to a quarter of an inch for most areas, but heavier amounts including isolated totals above half an inch are possible under stronger thunderstorms.

Areas across southeast California and southwest Arizona including Yuma, El Centro, and the lower Colorado River Valley could see storms develop later in the afternoon and into the evening.

Gusty winds around 35 miles per hour, small hail, patchy blowing dust, and heavy downpours are all possible with the strongest cells.

Despite the active skies, this system is also delivering a welcome cool-down. Temperatures will run below normal today and into Monday before warming again midweek. By the end of the week, highs could climb back into the low to mid-100s as high pressure builds in.

Rain chances will gradually taper off by Monday morning, with lingering showers mainly sticking to higher terrain areas. A second, weaker system could bring additional light showers Tuesday night into Wednesday.
