FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Strong winds and cooling temps this weekend across Imperial and Yuma Counties
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A significant cool down is on the way this weekend as an unseasonably strong low-pressure system makes its way through the Desert Southwest.
The system is already kicking up gusty winds and patchy dust across southeast California, prompting a Wind Advisory for Imperial County starting this afternoon through early Monday morning.
Gusts could reach up to 45 MPH this evening, and up to 55 MPH in wind-prone areas such as Ocotillo.
A FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY is in effect through Saturday night for Imperial County due to the strong winds and the potential for widespread blowing dust.
Visibility could be reduced at times, especially along I-8 and rural roads.
Air quality concerns continue as well.
An Air Quality Alert remains active through Saturday due to blowing dust, which may impact sensitive groups.
Winds will shift eastward Sunday with breezy to windy conditions expected across Yuma County, including the potential for dust development in the afternoon.
Gusts between 30 to 40 MPH are possible, especially near open desert areas.
Cooler temperatures are on the way, with highs in Yuma expected to drop into the upper 70s to low 80s Sunday and Monday, well below seasonal averages.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms may develop Sunday afternoon in higher terrain areas of Arizona, including La Paz and Maricopa Counties.
While rain chances remain low in Yuma and El Centro, gusty outflows from nearby storms may still impact the area.
Looking ahead, warmer temperatures and calmer winds return midweek as high pressure builds back in. Highs could reach back into the mid to upper 90s by Thursday, with triple digits possible next weekend.
