Heat and unhealthy air overtakes Yuma County, Imperial Valley

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The National Weather Service (NWS) still has an Extreme Heat Warning issued throughout the Desert Southwest.

Highs on Sunday will hit the 110-115 degree Fahrenheit range with Monday and Tuesday following suit.

According to the NWS, there's a 10-30% chance wind gusts reach 35 miles per hour in Yuma County and a slightly lower chance for the same in the Imperial Valley.

As of Sunday afternoon, our Imperial County Air Pollution Control District Air Quality Index is showing unhealthy conditions in Niland, Brawley and Calexico for sensitive groups.

In El Centro and Westmoreland, conditions are unhealthy regardless of personal sensitivity.

Take proper precautions for both the heat and air quality. Stay indoors, or in air-conditioned environments. Wear masks outdoors to avoid any health-related problems the air could cause.

The Extreme Heat Warning is in effect until Tuesday. There is no certainty on when air quality will improve, but conditions should not be a long-term concern heading into the week.

Humidity will also dip back down into the normal 15-20% range, stated by the NWS, following higher percentages on Saturday.
