Extreme heat warning issued as temperatures surge across the Desert Southwest
Highs up to 114 degrees, major heat risks expected
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) -Â The Desert Southwest is heading into an intense stretch of summer like weather, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect from Saturday morning through Monday evening.
Forecast models show temperatures across southern and central Arizona, including the Yuma area, climbing between 106 and 114 degrees over the three-day period.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that conditions will bring major heat risk, especially on Sunday and Monday, when temperatures are expected to peak.
While the heat may fall just short of breaking daily records, it will still be dangerously warm. The lower deserts are forecast to hit highs near 110 degrees on Saturday, with Sunday reaching up to 114, and Monday remaining close behind.
Health risks increase significantly during prolonged heat episodes like this, particularly for those without access to adequate cooling or hydration.
Some minor cooling may occur on Tuesday, when a weak trough is projected to pass through the Southwest. However, the relief will be limited, with temperatures still ranging between 105 and 109 degrees, a few degrees above normal for this time of year.
Humidity will remain very low throughout the stretch, bottoming out around 5 to 10 percent on the warmest days, and recovering only slightly overnight. Combined with gusty afternoon winds, especially on Monday, the dry conditions may also lead to increased fire weather concerns across the region.
Officials are urging residents to take the heat seriously. Limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check in on vulnerable family members or neighbors.
The NWS reminds the public never to leave children or pets in parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly in minutes.
