Desert Southwest weather update: Dangerous heat expected

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Dry and warmer conditions continue across Yuma and Imperial Counties Thursday, with even more intense heat expected this weekend.

Temperatures through Friday will run about three to five degrees above normal, with highs between 104 and 109 degrees under mostly clear skies. But this is just the warm-up.

A strong system of high pressure is building over the region and is expected to shift closer to the Desert Southwest by Saturday. As it strengthens, it will bring the hottest temperatures we've seen so far this year as an Extreme Heat Watch is already in effect from Saturday morning through Monday evening.

Forecast highs for the weekend are expected to reach between 110 and 114 degrees, especially on Sunday, which could be the peak of this heat wave.

While some forecast models have slightly lowered their temperature projections, dangerous heat remains likely, prompting ongoing concern for heat-related illness.

We are projecting a brief drop in temperatures by Tuesday, with highs dipping to around 103 to 107 degrees as a dry weather system moves in. But this cool-down looks short-lived, as temperatures are likely to rebuild late next week, pushing temperatures back toward 110 degrees in parts of the region.

Humidity levels will stay extremely low, ranging from 8-12% during the day and offering only modest recovery at night. Fire weather concerns may also rise early next week as breezy winds combine with dry fuels and critically low humidity levels.

Limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors especially the elderly or those without access to proper air conditioning.
