Windy weekend brings cooler temps and dust warnings to Yuma and Imperial Counties
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A windy weather system is bringing cooler temperatures and blowing dust to Yuma and Imperial Counties this weekend, and public health officials are warning residents in Imperial County to be aware of poor air quality through Saturday.
The Imperial County Air Pollution Control District has issued an Air Quality Alert due to high levels of dust and particle pollution caused by the winds.
The alert is in effect through Saturday, and affects areas including El Centro, Calexico, Brawley, Ocotillo, and nearby communities.
Dust in the air can lead to breathing problems, especially for people with asthma, heart or lung disease, older adults, pregnant women, and children. Health officials recommend that people in these groups limit time outside and avoid strenuous activities until conditions improve.
A Wind Advisory is also in place for the southwest corner of Imperial County, where wind gusts could reach up to 55 miles per hour, especially in higher terrain. In Yuma and the lower deserts, gusts of 30 to 40 mph are still likely and could kick up blowing dust, reducing visibility on roads.
Drivers should use caution, especially along I-8 and desert highways, where sudden dust storms can make travel dangerous.
Along with the wind, the system is bringing cooler-than-normal temperatures. Highs in Yuma and Imperial this weekend are expected to stay in the upper 70s to low 80s, about 10 degrees below average.
Cool temperatures will continue into early next week, with a slow warm-up expected starting Wednesday or Thursday.
Fire officials are also watching conditions in parts of eastern Yuma County, where dry fuels and wind may raise the risk of wildfires. While cooler temperatures are helping a bit, residents are still asked to be cautious and avoid any outdoor burning.
Keep an eye on air quality levels, especially if you're in an at-risk group. You can find real-time air quality updates at airnow.gov or through local health department resources.
