Hot weekend across the Desert Southwest, slight cooldown on the way

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - It's a hot one across the Desert Southwest. Temperatures in Yuma and Imperial County soared into the upper 90s Saturday, and a few spots could even hit 100°.

This heat is thanks to high pressure sitting over the region, keeping skies clear and conditions dry.

But a slight cooldown is on the way. A weather system moving through the Northwest will help push that high pressure out of the area. Starting Sunday, temperatures will drop a few degrees, though it'll still be warmer than normal for this time of year.

Winds are also expected to pick up, especially in the afternoons and evenings. That, combined with the dry air, brings an increased fire danger for parts of the higher terrain east of Yuma and Imperial counties.

Looking ahead to late next week, there's a chance we'll see bigger changes. Another system could bring cooler temperatures and maybe even some rain to Arizona's mountains. It's still too early to know for sure, but we'll be watching it closely.

For now, stay cool, stay hydrated, and be careful with anything that could spark a fire.
