Gusty winds and cooler temps expected this week

Cooler days ahead, but gusty conditions for Desert Southwest

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Residents across Yuma and Imperial Counties should prepare for breezy conditions and a slight drop in temperatures as a series of weather disturbances move through the Desert Southwest this week.

While rain chances will remain minimal for lower desert areas, gusty winds could bring periods of blowing dust and increased fire weather concerns.

A fast-moving weather system is sweeping through the region, bringing stronger winds through early evening. Some areas, particularly in southeastern California and southwestern Arizona, could see wind gusts reaching 20-30 mph.

These gusts may create hazardous travel conditions, particularly along major roadways like Interstate 8. Blowing dust could reduce visibility in open desert areas, though the extent of dust storms will largely depend on local land conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued wind advisories and blowing dust warnings in some areas, but officials note that overall wind speeds may remain just below advisory levels in many spots.

Even so, the combination of gusty conditions and dry fuels could elevate the risk of wildfires, so residents are urged to exercise caution with any outdoor burning or equipment that could spark a fire.

While this storm system is packing strong winds, it is lacking significant moisture. Most precipitation will be confined to higher elevations north and east of Phoenix, with only isolated chances of light showers in the lower desert areas. Those in the mountains of Gila County have a slightly better chance of seeing some rain overnight.

Temperatures will trend cooler as a result of these disturbances, but the cooldown will be modest in Yuma and Imperial Counties. Expect highs in the mid to upper 70s through the weekend, with overnight lows dipping into the 50s.
