Five dead from heat-related illnesses in Mexicali

MEXICALI, Mexico (KYMA) - Five people have died from heat-related illnesses in Mexicali.

Health authorities have stepped up medical outreach efforts in public spaces to provide care and help prevent more heat-related deaths. One of these places is Mariachi Park, where there are hundreds of migrants and homeless people.

State health department workers are checking their vital signs for heat-related illnesses.

Water, electrolyte drinks, and portable air conditioners are available to help them stay safe during the extreme heat.

"We provide shower facilities, giving everyone a towel and soap to bathe due to the high temperatures," said Graciela Alvarez, coordinator for Mariachi Park Care. "We also have an area where they can lie down, and the service operates 24 hours a day."

Since April, more than 5,000 people have received medical care at Mariachi Park.
