Windy and cooler weather moves in

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - A series of Pacific storm systems will impact Yuma and the Imperial Valley beginning late today, bringing windy conditions, spotty rain chances, and a noticeable drop in temperatures through midweek.

Winds will increase late this afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches from the west. Gusts between 35 and 45 mph are expected across the lower deserts, including Yuma and much of the Imperial Valley. Isolated higher gusts are possible in exposed and elevated areas.

Winds will shift from the south to southwest this evening as the front moves through, and areas of blowing dust may briefly reduce visibility in open desert locations.

Scattered showers will develop along and ahead of the front. Rainfall amounts are expected to remain light, generally between a few hundredths of an inch up to around a quarter inch at most.

Some locations in the Imperial Valley may see only brief or spotty showers, while Yuma has a slightly better chance of measurable rainfall late Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

Thunderstorms are not expected to be widespread, though an isolated lightning strike cannot be completely ruled out. The primary concern with any shower activity will be brief, gusty winds.

Cooler air will move in behind the system Tuesday, with afternoon highs settling into the mid to upper 60s. Overnight lows will drop into the 40s.

Another disturbance on Wednesday will reinforce breezy conditions and keep temperatures below normal, though rainfall chances locally remain limited.

Additional weak systems later in the week will help maintain cooler-than-average temperatures through at least Friday. Gradual warming is expected heading into next weekend.

Residents across Yuma and the Imperial Valley should secure loose outdoor items and be prepared for strong wind gusts Monday night.
