Clouds, light rain move through Thursday

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Clouds are increasing across Arizona today as an unsettled weather pattern moves into the region, bringing periods of light rain through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a cut-off low pressure system offshore is sending a surge of moisture into the Desert Southwest.

While widespread heavy rain is not expected, several rounds of light showers are possible from this afternoon through Thursday.

The first batch of showers is expected late this afternoon into the evening, mainly impacting south-central Arizona and parts of southeast California. Rainfall from this initial band should stay light, generally under a tenth of an inch, especially across lower desert locations.

Overnight tonight and into Thursday, additional isolated to scattered showers could develop, particularly north and east of the Phoenix metro and in higher terrain areas. Those locations could see a quarter to nearly half an inch of rain, while most desert communities pick up lighter amounts.

Skies will stay mostly cloudy, and moisture levels will rise quickly, with noticeably higher humidity compared to recent days. Despite the clouds and rain chances, temperatures will remain mild, running a few degrees above normal both during the day and overnight.

By Friday, rain chances taper off as drier air works back into the region. Much of the weekend is expected to stay dry, though another chance for unsettled weather may arrive early next week.
