Unseasonably warm, dry weather continues
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Dry, tranquil weather and well-above-normal temperatures will continue across Yuma and Imperial counties through the weekend and into early next week as strong high pressure remains locked over the Desert Southwest.
This afternoon and into Friday, sunshine will dominate with very little cloud cover and light winds. High temperatures across the lower deserts of Yuma County and Imperial County are expected to climb into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees, running about 10 to 15 degrees above average for mid-December. Friday is expected to be slightly warmer than today as the ridge of high pressure strengthens.
The warm pattern holds steady through the weekend and early next week. Afternoon highs are forecast to remain in the upper 70s to low 80s, keeping conditions dry and unusually mild for this time of year. Overnight lows will also stay warmer than normal, with clear skies and calm winds allowing for comfortable evenings.
A noticeable shift in the weather pattern is expected by the middle to latter part of next week. Forecast models show the high pressure ridge moving east, opening the door for a Pacific system to approach the region. As that system develops, cloud cover will increase, and rain chances may return as early as Wednesday, especially across western desert areas, including Imperial County.
While there is still uncertainty regarding the strength and exact timing of the system, moisture levels are expected to rise enough to support precipitation chances later next week. Any rainfall would fall as rain, even in higher elevations, due to the warm nature of the system.
Temperatures are expected to cool slightly once the pattern changes, though readings will likely remain above seasonal averages.
For now, residents in Yuma and Imperial counties can expect several more days of sunny skies, light winds, and unseasonably warm afternoons before a potential midweek cooldown and rain chances arrive.
