FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Rain holding off but intense winds push through the Desert Southwest

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - In the midst of a storm pushing through the region, precipitation has held off more than originally anticipated, but there are still chances for scattered rain heading into the night.

The Imperial Valley seemed to get the brunt of the rain and El Centro, up to Imperial, can expect more rain in the later afternoon window.

As for Yuma County, heading east from Wellton to Dateland, rain is going to make a more prominent appearance around those dinner time hours.

A minor front of rain clouds will also push northward from San Luis through Yuma from 5:00 p.m. MST to around 6:30 p.m. MST, as is being currently tracked.

The heavier rainfall will come to a close across the Desert Southwest by 8:00 p.m. MST and should hold off for the rest of the weekend. Scattered showers will push through the area on Sunday, but not nearly to the same effect.

Winds are also a major player across the entire region and will continue to be for the whole weekend. Ocotillo will see wind gusts north of 55 mph Saturday evening, but the rest of the Imperial Valley can look forward to calming winds early Saturday evening and into Sunday afternoon, with a chance gusts increase Saturday in the later evening hours.

As for Yuma County, winds above 20 mph will persist heading into the evening, around 7:00 p.m. MST. They will die down slightly for folks looking to head out Saturday night.

When late Sunday morning rolls around in the Desert Southwest, wind gusts will pick back up across the entire region.

As it is currently being tracked, it will remain a factor in the weather throughout the rest of the weekend from the Sunday afternoon window.

Temperatures will remain below average for this time of the year. Saturday night will hit the 60s by 7:30 p.m. MST, with lows expected to reach the mid-50s overnight. Sunday will see peak in the 70-to-75°F range in the Desert Southwest.
