Dangerous heat returns after moderate weekend
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Another stretch of extreme heat is on the way for Yuma and Imperial Counties, with temperatures climbing to near-record levels by midweek.
High pressure will strengthen over the region starting Tuesday, driving daytime highs back into the triple digits.
The hottest days are expected Wednesday through Friday, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 112 to 115 degrees in Yuma, Blythe, and El Centro.
Overnight lows will also stay uncomfortably warm, hovering in the upper 80s to low 90s, providing little relief from the daytime heat.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for both Yuma and Imperial Counties beginning Wednesday morning and lasting through Friday evening.
Officials warn of a major to extreme heat risk, urging residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
While conditions will remain mostly dry through midweek, increasing moisture later this week could spark scattered monsoon storms by Thursday and Friday.
That may bring brief cooling and gusty winds, though the heat will remain the dominant concern.
Forecasters note that record highs for this week in Yuma and El Centro range from 114 to 117 degrees, and temperatures may come close to those marks.
