Extreme heat is causing more and more deaths
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - In recent years, the summer heat has not been just uncomfortable, but it has also been increasingly deadly.
That reality, emphasized by a pair of new studies that found a "very concerning" rise in the number of climate-related deaths.
One of the studies found the number of deaths caused by high temperatures increased by 74% globally between 1980 and 2016. In the U.S., more than 600 people are killed by extreme heat every year.
But it's not just summer that is getting deadlier. Apparently winter as well, as a new report found that deaths related to extreme cold increased 31% since 1990.
Experts say human-caused climate change is behind the deadly extremes, due to greenhouse gas emissions from industry, transportation and agriculture.
