CAUGHT ON CAMERA: NYPD officer jumps into creek to save woman

NEW YORK (NBC, KYMA) - Body cam footage from the New York Police Department (NYPD) shows a harrowing rescue from Newtown Creek in Queens Friday.

NYPD HarborUunit responded to a 911 call for a woman who had fallen into the creek.

Officers found the woman clinging to a wooden piling and hanging on for life.

They immediately tossed out a flotation device but the woman can't reach it and they can't get closer due to obstructions in the creek. This prompted an officer to spring into action and quickly jump into the murky water.

The body camera footage shows the officer swim to her, secures the woman with the floatation device and brings her to safety aboard the boat.

Once on shore, emergency responders gave her oxygen and prepared her for transport to a local hospital.

The officer is bandaged for a laceration he received on his arm during the rescue.
