57-year-old gets a genetically modified pig heart

(KYMA, KECY/ CBS) - A medical first in the operating room as surgeons from the University of Maryland Medical Center transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a 57-year-old man.

His advanced heart disease made him ineligible for a human organ.

Doctors say this experimental treatment offered their patient the best hope for some quality of life.
