CBS 13 Sports: Vikings seek revenge
The Holtville Vikings boys basketball team advance to Division semifinals with 57-53 win over Escondido Charter
HOLTVILLE, Calif. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - Last year the Holtville Vikings boys basketball team saw their season come to an end in the CIF San Diego Division semifinals versus Calvin Christian.
"We're ready," Holtville boys basketball head coach Tony Ramos said. "Last year they left kind of a sour taste in our mouth. They are the team we lost to. We didn't shoot well."
On Saturday in the Viking Gymnasium, after a sluggish start, the Vikings pulled away from Escondido Charter to secure a 57-53 win. The end result was not as close as the final score indicates.
"We started out slow," Ramos said. "Once we got going our defense picked up which led to some extra points on offense. That's the difference in the game. We missed some free throws in the end and we need to work on that."
With the win, the Vikings sail into unchartered waters by advancing to the Division IV semifinals.
"This is the furthest we've been," Ramos said.
Up next, a chance for the Vikings to cleanse the sour taste left in their mouth by Calvin Christian. The Crusaders eliminated Holtville in 2020, 46-29. The rematch will take place this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Calvin Christian High School.
