IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)-The Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAP) hands out goody bags to 25 families on Thursday.

The bags included fun activities and resources needed to help parents educate their children at home.

The CAP council serves about 400 families every year.

Counselors at CAP provide free parenting classes at their El Centro office.

“Anyone with a child, our services are here to help. We actually have a higher percentage of self-referred parents seeking services than court-ordered parents,” said Yvette Garcia, Child Abuse Prevention Council Executive Director.

Due to the pandemic, CAP switched their classes to online platforms.

Garcia said parents need all the help they can get right now.

“Our programs are geared around strengthening the families. We’re not here to say anyone is doing anything wrong. We are here to help you be a better parent and make your family stronger,” said Garcia.

Cap Council has been able to give 50 families goody bags with the help of donations from local businesses.

They hope to reach all 400 of their families. Those interested in donating can contact CAP Council at (760) 353-8300.
