YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As a young adult growing up in Yuma, 20-year-old Alex Lackey has always had a passion for dance. From a young age, he knew being on the dance floor was where he belonged.

Fast forward to the present day, Lackey is now teaching at Dancemakers three days a week for students of all ages and skill levels. He comes up with his own choreography and says YouTube has been an inspirational platform for him to get his creative juices flowing.

He mentioned some of his role models in the dance world are from across the pond, San Diego natives Keone & Mari who has appeared on World of Dance.

Lackey plans to move to Los Angeles in a couple of months to further his career. However, he's had a tricky encounter with the City of Angels before.

In 2018, Lackey moved to Los Angeles for the first time and was sleeping on friends' couches and at one point, living out of his car. He says it was all worth it because he was following his dreams.

“The challenges I go through the ups and downs that motivates and inspires me to create and express myself," says Lackey.

On top of teaching, Lackey works another job unrelated to dance and trains independently through online classes. He also travels to different cities to attend A-list choreographers classes and absorb as much as he can.

“It’s super amazing to have the opportunity to do what I love because of all the years building up my training, it's really cool to mesh that all together and share that with everyone. I’m always a student still and go back to where I started from just freestyling and making up stuff like that and creating," said Lackey.
