One cat rescue in North Carolina puts pause on black cat adoptions ahead of Halloween

GREENVILLE, N.C. (NBC, KYMA) - As Halloween approaches, some cat rescues have paused black cat adoptions.

Due to concerns regarding superstitions and stereotypes that arise with the spooky season.

The Feline Freedom Society in Greenville, North Carolina announced they have temporarily paused black cat adoptions this Halloween season.

It's a choice that was made due to concerns of black cats being associated with bad luck, Halloween imagery, and more.

During this pause, which began Sunday and goes until November 1, the rescue will not be approving new adoption applications for black cats.

Applications will be reviewed when the pause is lifted.

Board member Allison Schaefer said they're doing this pause to make sure no one adopts a cat with malicious intent.

The rescue said they will, however, still consider black cat adoptions during this period for previously approved applicants and trusted friends or family members.

Adoptions for cats and kittens of all other colors will continue as normal.
