Open water swimmer Catherine Breed completes 900-mile swim across California coast

California (NBC, KYMA) - An extraordinary journey across the California coastline is complete.

Open-water swimmer Catherine Breed has finished a 900-mile swim from the Oregon border to Mexico after 111 days in the Pacific.

Through cold waters, powerful seas and unpredictable currents, Catherine Breed has accomplished an extraordinary feat of endurance.

The open-water swimmer completed her ambitious swim California expedition Monday, reaching shore at Coronado bay after nearly four months in the PacificOocean.

Breed swam 9.5 miles Sunday, leaving fewer than three miles to go on the final day of her 900-mile journey.

She described the last stretch as a victory lap, a fitting finish to an adventure that tested her strength and determination.

The 111-day expedition is believed to be the first completed staged swim of California's entire coastline, stretching from the Oregon border to Mexico.

Formal recognition is still subject to a review of the supporting records, but Breed's journey marks a remarkable milestone in open-water swimming.
