Freight train derailment in Missouri prompts major emergency response

FERGUSON, Mo. (NBC, KYMA) - A freight train derailment in Ferguson, Missouri Sunday prompted a major emergency response and power outages.

Norfolk Southern says about 20 cars derailed shortly after 7 p.m. Central Sunday evening along Ferguson Avenue, near Paul Avenue.

The westbound train was carrying a mix of auto carriers, boxcars and gondola cars, with some of the derailed cars carrying vehicles.

Emergency crews, hazmat teams, Norfolk Southern representatives and utility workers responded to the scene as authorities urged people to stay away from the area.

One car on the train was carrying hazardous materials, but officials said it was not among the cars that derailed, and there was no immediate threat.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
