Driveway of Malibu home collapses due to steady rainfall and high surf

MALIBU, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Coastal erosion is taking its toll on seaside homes in Malibu as strong surf continues to batter the California coast.

A driveway in front of a vacant beachfront Malibu home collapsed early Tuesday morning, the damage coming from steady rainfall and high surf.

Utility crews and Department of Building and safety personnel responded to the location on a private road along Sea Level Drive after the collapse damaged a gas main.

The collapse swallowed up concrete along with a portable toilet that was in front of the residence.

At least five homes have been red-tagged and deemed uninhabitable in the Malibu area due to severe surf.

The extreme waves being forced farther inland by Hurricane Marie, which is spinning hundreds of miles off the California coast.

So far, no injuries are being reported.
