Today is National Barbecue Day!

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Head into the weekend by firing up that grill because Friday is National Barbecue Day!

Celebrate the day by cooking meals cooking over charcoal, wood, or gas. Many grillers have their own special barbecue sauce recipe, but many feature a mixture of ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, soy, and molasses.

Historians say that the first documentation of barbecue was on an island of Hispaniola and there's proof Christopher Columbus saw indigenous tribes there cook meat over an open flame.

As for residents right here in the U.S., most residents who live in the southeastern part of the of the nation often brag about their respective barbecue styles, but it reportedly originated over in North Carolina.
