NBC 11 Sports: Meza, Nicewander lead the way in Kofa soccer sweep of Yuma, historic day of Unified basketball & San Luis thriller

YUMA, Ariz., (KYMA, KECY) - Many special student-athletes took the floor on Tuesday for the opening game of AIA-sanctioned Unified Basketball between Kofa and San Luis.

Meanwhile, Kofa dominated most of the day - picking up three wins in other sports.

Kofa girls soccer and boys soccer both pulled the mercy rule on the Yuma Criminals. The girls squad won 8-0 behind and incredible six goals from Arlene Meza. The boys were led by four Tiernan Nicewander goals in the 9-0 win.

The Kings girls hoops team also got back to winning ways against Independence with lead scorer Shantal Montiel back and healthy. In the meantime, the boys squad took a tough two-point loss on the road.

Yuma Catholic hoops also staying hot on both boys and girls sides. The Lady Shamrocks beating up on Kingman 70-30 behind 22 points from Reese Sellers. Amanda Wiley dropped 14 points and Rian Martinez added another 12 points.

The boys team dominated in the same way, beating Kingman 70-32. Sebi Patane had 17 points, followed by 15 from each Fernando Vazquez and Braden Moore.

The San Luis Sidewinders boys team pulled out a thriller on the road, coming back from nine down against San Pasqual and winning on an Efren Figueroa bucket with under three seconds to go.

Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors came out victorious on the girls side, improving to 8-4 on the season after beating San Luis 43-17.
