NBC 11 Sports: Shamrock hoops both cruise to lucky win 13, Lady Hawks soccer stays unbeaten & Spartans put a dent in Scots’ hot start
YUMA, Ariz., (KYMA, KECY) - As the high school winter sports season picks back up, many local teams look to turn around their misfortunes, or for some, carry their momentum into the second half.
A couple of those teams staying hot sit right in Yuma's backyard - both Yuma Catholic basketball teams and the Gila Ridge Hawks girls soccer squad.
The Shamrock girls hoops team started off the night from Carol McElhaney Oden Gym with a big win over the Parker Broncs, led once again by their three top scores - Amanda Wiley, Rian Martinez and Reese Sellers - combining for 43 of the Rocks 49 points.
Shortly after, the boys team had a commanding 27-point win also taking down Parker to improve to 13-2. The Shamrocks were led by Landen Urquijo's 16 points, along with 14 points from Braden Moore and 11 from Sebi Patane.
To the soccer pitch, the Gila Ridge Lady Hawks continued to play great ball after a trip down I-8 West to El Centro on Thursday. The Hawks controlled the ball for a large majority of the game, cashing in on two early goals from Addison Duke and Millianie Vega.
They would cruise to a 4-0 win and improve to 6-0-1 on the season.
Staying out in El Centro, the Spartans boys hoops squad would pour on the points on their home floor, avenging their loss from December 13th to the 9-2 Vincent Memorial Scots.
The Spartans turned a nine-point halftime lead into an 87-61 win after a big third quarter to put the game out of reach, improving to 11-7 on the season.
Meanwhile back on the soccer pitch, both Central boys and girls soccer squads took care of Yuma Catholic. The boys winning 4-0 at home, with the girls winning 6-2 over the Rocks on the road.
