Diamondbacks erase seven run deficit, walk off Cardinals 8-7 to win series

PHOENIX (KYMA) - The Arizona Diamondbacks pulled off one of the most dramatic victories in franchise history Sunday, storming back from a seven-run deficit to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 in 10 innings at Chase Field.

With both teams battling for National League Wild Card positioning, the series finale carried major postseason implications.

The Cardinals appeared to be in complete control after erupting for five runs in the third inning against Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez.

Blaze Jordan started the scoring with an RBI triple before rookie J.J. Wetherholt added an RBI single. Jordan Walker followed with another run-scoring hit, and Alec Burleson capped the inning with a two-run single to give St. Louis a 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals extended their advantage to 7-0 in the fifth when Jordan delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single, collecting his third RBI of the afternoon.

Arizona finally responded with three runs in the sixth before producing one of the game's biggest highlights in the seventh.

Geraldo Perdomo lined a ball into left field that skipped past Cardinals left fielder Jose Fermin, allowing Adrian Del Castillo to score. Perdomo never slowed down, racing all the way around the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run that cut the deficit to 7-5.

The Diamondbacks completed the comeback in the eighth inning when Nolan Arenado, facing his former team, launched a two-run home run with two outs to tie the game at 7-7. The game tying blast was the 1,999th hit of Arenado's career.

In the 10th inning, Max Kepler delivered the game-winning hit, driving a ball over the right fielder's head to score Jorge Barrosa from third and complete the stunning 8-7 walk-off victory.

The comeback tied the largest in Diamondbacks franchise history, as Arizona erased a seven-run deficit to secure the series win and gain valuable ground in the National League Wild Card race.
