Padres fall 5-2 to Athletics, still take series win

SAN DIEGO (KYMA) - The San Diego Padres were unable to complete the sweep Sunday, falling 5-2 to the Oakland Athletics despite securing the series victory.

Starting pitcher Michael King struggled to settle in after his strong outing against the Dodgers his last time on the mound.

King allowed four earned runs and issued four walks in just three and two-thirds innings of work.

The Athletics wasted little time getting on the board as right fielder Carlos Cortes launched a leadoff home run off of King to spark Oakland's offense.

San Diego finished with good offense production, generating nine hits in the contest. The A's out hit them slightly with 10, but capitalized more with runners in scoring position. The Padres could not rally late to close the gap.

Despite the loss, the Padres still claimed the series and remain firmly in the National League West division race.

San Diego now sits just one and a half game behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
